Twitter Refugee, Small on Medium Now Subbing and Stacking Here
Former Journalist and Broadcaster, Current Author and Podcaster
It's been an interesting ride over at Twittersville.
After a fifteen-year journey on Twitter, where I built up a decent-sized following of great folks, I can't help but feel a sense of profound disappointment. The eccentric man-child from South Africa has all but turned the platform into a haven for extreme political viewpoints and a Disneyland for the thoughtless. I used to enjoy Twitter for its simplicity, forming connections, and occasional promotion of my books and articles. However, it seems those days are behind us. I've been yearning for a new space to share more detailed ideas and perspectives.
Medium seems more like Small.
I tried and still do publish my work on Medium, where I have over 1,700 followers, but it doesn't quite hit the social interaction mark for me. LinkedIn is another platform where I have an audience, but it's not the ideal place to share my political musings. So, when The Bulwark, a group I've formed a once wary but now enthusiastic political alliance with, started using Substack, it piqued my interest. I like it here, and I suppose if you’re here, you get the same feeling.
So, what's this all about?
As you've probably guessed from my Bulwark reference, I have a lot to say about politics, culture, and more. Moreover, I've been searching for a unified platform for my podcasts, essays, books, and other content. This is it. Expect a moderate Midwesterner's viewpoint on various topics, including politics, the news media, and culture. We often hear about these topics from those on the coasts, but what about those of us in the middle, both geographically and ideologically?
Please note that I'm a staunch supporter of Biden—I've been a fan since reading What It Takes. While I don't display a Biden flag in my yard, I'm prepared to defend most of his policies.
My varied experiences—running for state office (and gratefully losing—no I am not rationalizing!), and working as a reporter, editor, journalist, business owner, speaker, and amateur historian—have shaped my outlook.
I've titled this endeavor 'All the Fits That's News' and I hope you'll subscribe and find it enjoyable and thought-provoking. Let me know what you think in the comments, and sharing here on Substack is welcome!
